As a specialty of the dental profession, oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete four to six years of intensive post-doctorate, hospital-based training following four years of dental school. They train alongside medical residents in internal medicine, general surgery, and anesthesiology, and spend time in otolaryngology, plastic surgery, emergency medicine and trauma surgery. This training focuses almost completely on the bone, skin and muscles of the face, mouth and jaw. Oral surgeons have knowledge and expertise that uniquely qualifies them to diagnose and treat a number of functional and esthetic conditions in this anatomical area.
